Taco Palacio, located at 1700 S. Halsted Street in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago, is my favorite place to go when I forget to bring my lunch to work. When you walk into Taco Palacio, you can either take an immediate right where you’ll find the kitchen and a bar with only five stools, or you can go straight back to a pool hall that is usually filled with local Pilsenites drinking Coronas at lunchtime. If you go to the right, you are immediately greeted by the sweetest lady who cooks some amazing, no frills Mexican food. The kitchen is at most 12×12 and she cooks right in front of you. The experience alone is so fun and you don’t HAVE to speak Spanish but it would probably make it easier.
Each time I paid a visit to Taco Palacio, I’ve ordered the steak burrito ($4.50) and a steak taco ($1.50). It’s topped with onions, tomatos, lettuce, cheese, and some hot sauce is optional but the simplicity makes the food so good. The food can be greasy and the meat is by no means fillet mignon but that’s all part of the experience and for the price, this food is really good and the food will fill you up too.
